Surveillance cameras: analogue versus digital

Because of their reliability and low cost, analogue systems are still preferred. An old and still widely applied system with a low image quality we actually best leave a thing of the past.

Digital: IP or HD-SDI cameras

Apart from analogue cameras, also high resolution digital cameras exist, such as IP cameras and HD-SDI cameras. Contrary to HD-SDI, IP cameras come in many shapes and sizes. And for these cameras too goes: buying cheap is buying twice. When you install IP cameras, it is advisable to also renew your network infrastructure and to master their use.

The advantage of IP and HD-SDI cameras is the high resolution, and thus the high image quality and resolution. Furthermore, this system is very reliable. HD-SDI systems transfer data digitally over coax. HD-SDI and IP are slightly more costly than an analogue system.

Conclusion

Despite the advantages of digital systems such as HD-SDI and IP, analogue systems are still in high demand and installed because of the large choice, the purchaser’s lack of knowledge and low cost. The quality of the security camera largely depends on the number of image lines and the lens. When you buy a camera, really think about which purpose it serves and where exactly it will be installed.

  • When mapping out a larger surveillance area, make sure you plan to have a camera giving you a clear image of the entrance.
  • When placing an outdoor camera, consider the weather and position of the sun.
  • Make sure you know whether you need a zoom lens, a moving camera (PTZ) or emergency battery.

Keep these aspects in mind, and you are sure to choose the camera that best fits your needs.
